Too Many Damn Commercials During Games
November 1, 2010
Ok
this topic has been brewing for a couple of weeks now. It seems a
perfect time to address this with the most recent news out of Monday
Night Football’s game between the Titans and the Jags. I and
my fellow Shock Jocker, Scott, have been discussing the apparent
up-tick in commercials and commercial breaks during NFL games. I
believe it has now risen to the level of the ridiculous. Seemingly
every 5 minutes there is another commercial break. Now I’m
all for capitalism and making money, but the NFL is also in the
entertainment business. Mr. Goddell, all these commercials are NOT
entertaining. They are annoying. And you know it’s getting
really bad when you flip to the Red Zone channel on DirecTV’s
NFL package and they have to show replays because there are no live
games playing at the time. So let me get this straight, we have 8 or 9
games in progress and not a single one is currently playing? They are
ALL on commercial break? Something is wrong with that. This has not
only happened once, but we have noticed it several times over the past
couple of weeks.
This takes us to the Monday Night game where the Titans were crushing
the Jaguars. According to Jeff Fisher the lead referee came to him with
only a couple of minutes left and said we (ESPN) are couple of
commercials short and requested that both coaches call some timeouts so
they could get them in. Seriously??? I already have a hard enough time
staying up till 1am to watch these games. Now I need to wait 15 or 20
minutes extra so you guys can make some more money? Jack Del Rio
apparently did heed this call for a timeout. This resulted in the
Titan’s Chris Johnson scoring a 35 yard touchdown on a 4th
down with under 2 minutes remaining. If I was a player on the Jags
I’d be pissed. Hey coach, they were gonna kneel down and end
the game. Now you made us look like chumps, hurt our stats, and helped
us looked even worse than we already did. Thanks. Any coach that would
have said yes to that request is a fool in my estimation. Jeff Fisher
declined because he just wanted to kneel down and end the game. But
because Del Rio decided to call an unnecessary timeout they had to try
for the first down.
I guess Randy Moss was right when he said the NFL is just a business
now. It’s not a game. And the sooner the fans get this
through their heads the better. When I heard that I was a little taken
aback. I know it’s a business, but the way he put it was that
the game was not fun anymore. It’s a job. Well if you take
the fun out why would anyone want to subject their bodies to the
punishment? Just for the money? If the NFL keeps going the way it is I
believe players will begin to retire earlier and earlier. When you are
considered only a product to be discarded when used up why would I give
a crap about your organization? People don’t work that way.
The new Randy Moss’s of the world will retire early after
they’ve gotten their money and just say screw it.
What’s the point? They will get into the game for the love of
it, but then soon realize in the NFL that there’s no fun
anymore. Hell if it was me I would get in, get my money, get out, and
then go play for some minor league team somewhere, or in Canada and
have fun again. That way you get the best of both worlds. You have your
cash, you get to play for fun, and you don’t have all the
annoying reporters bothering you anymore. It’s a win, win,
win scenario.
I believe the NFL needs to be really careful over the next couple of
years. You have a pending player strike coming up, largely due to this
idiot Head of the Players Association in my view. You have league ideas
like raising the number of games to 18. You have talk of putting a team
in another country, or worse yet playing a Super Bowl in another
country. This is AMERICA’s game. I DON’T WANT it
played in another country. The ONLY reason to do this is money. I love
football. I grew up playing it. I do not like the turns the NFL is
taking. They seem to be putting out all these feelers to see what
sticks and what doesn’t. Maybe I’m too old school,
but I’m beginning to not enjoy watching the games anymore.
The NFL seems oblivious to this countries current economic status.
Their ticket prices are through the roof, the vender’s prices
at the games are out of control, the NFL Ticket on DirecTV keeps
raising its prices, the NFL Network, FOX, and CBS now put sponsors in
their segments like it’s some kind of talk radio show, and
now you want to annoy me by putting 50 commercials in during a game?
And you do this to the extent that you ask coaches to take timeouts to
get them all in. It’s BS. Why don’t I just wait
till Sunday night and watch the highlights? At least then I
won’t be subjected to the commercials. I could actually get
some yard work done. Hey that’s an idea. Skip the games for
yard work. NFL if you make that be my choice you are soon to fail.
