Cedric Benson Breathes A Sign of Relief
August 3, 2010
The
Bengals appear to be on a hot streak right now, first they sign TO and
then they get the news that the NFL front office will not suspend
Cedric Benson for his most recent altercation. This is great news for
the Bengals and for Benson’s fantasy owners. Barring any
pre-season injuries the Bengals are loaded for a fantasy owners dream.
All these new “toys”, once in synch, should help
each other to excel. Upon
reading Benson’s remarks about his visit to the Commissioner
and how the Bengals handled his situation I was struck at how happy,
almost giddy, he sounded. It reminds me of a guy who never in his life
got any support from his family then suddenly meets the woman of his
dreams. This woman supports him unconditionally, he marries her, and
they live happily ever after. Benson says Brown (team owner) and the
Bengals took the time to listen to and investigate his side of the
story. A story that appears to involve Benson being jumped and sucker
punched in an Austin, Texas bar. Does this sound plausible? Of course
it does. In today’s climate is seems all too common for high
profile people to require protection from regular citizens. These
low-lifes are looking for some sort of easy payday. Now I could divert
onto a whole new tangent about the trend our society is taking, but
will restrain myself.
My take is that Benson had an altercation. It seems that he was not the
instigator (he was the one who contacted police on the night of the
incident). All sides involved (the Police, the Bengal officials, and
the Commissioners office) took the time to look at the facts, took the
time to listen to Benson’s version of events, and put his
prior problems aside in evaluating this problem. This is how a team and
a league should ALWAYS look at these problems. And I believe this has
created a very loyal player. We all know that happy players play better
and are more motivated and I see this as just one more reason for
another big year for Benson. He was a sleeper last year and I see NO
reason why he won’t top the 1,000 yard mark again this year.
